Gyeongpo Beach
Summer beach famous for having many young visitors
Introduction
Gyeongpo Beach in Anhyeon-dong, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do is one of the best beaches to visit in the summertime. There is saying, if you want to feel the youthful energy of Korea during the hot summer, go to Haeundae in Busan or Gyeongpodae in Gangneung. Many young people come to Gyeongpo Beach and as a result family visitors have spread to other beaches in Yangyang and Goseong. Gyeongpo is famous for being the longest coastal beach. Located 6km to the north of the city center and 1km from Gyeongpodae Pavilion, the beach shows off the clear waters of the East Sea along and shining sand. The parasols that cover the beach in the summertime look as if paint has been splashed on the beach and create a splendid view. Only after seeing this sight has your Gangneung travels truly begun.

Gyeongpo Beach can be reached in 15 minutes from downtown Gangneung. Once you set foot on the beach, you are greeted by the fresh smell of the ocean and the rough sound of the waves. The open beach view will lighthen your heart and let your worries and troubles go away. It is a very attractive tourist site. After arriving at Gyeongpo Beach, you can enjoy a nice drive along the Beach on the tree-lined street. There are cafes you can visit that fit your taste and enjoy Gyeongpo Beach as you like.

In Gwandongbyeolgok, one of the fathers of lyrical literature Jeong Cheol described Gyeongpo in mid Choseon Period as "Following the royal azaleas of Hyeonsan Mountain that the dinnertime sunlight slightly shines past, I rode the wagon that the Taoist gods ride and went down to Gyeongpo". Also, on hit TV show "Runningman" host Yoo Jae-suk said "I love Gyeongpodae" and the sight became more famous. One of the top eight famous sites in Eastern Korea, you can see the moon in five different ways at Gyeongpodae. Gyeongpodae is beautiful year round with cherry blossoms in the spring, as the perfect summer getaway location, waterlilies in the fall, and snow covered pine trees in the winter. Gyeonpo Beach is 1.8km long, with waves coming ashore as if trying to swallow something, and 1.44㎢ of white sand and 4km of pine trees surrounding it as if it were a folding screen insulating the area from the rest of the world. Gyeonpo Beach is beautiful with a unique harmony between dynamic and calm forces. In the spring, the greenish water washes ashore from Oribawi Rock and Sinmibawi Rock and hits the white sand. In the summer, it is an ocean where you can enjoy and make memories in the sizzling heat. In the fall, it is a beach you would want to walk alone on. In the winter, it is a beach where someone just might come visit you from afar. It changes every season to give visitors a sense of serenity and a lasting impression.

Gyeongpodae Pavilion

Introduction
'Gyeongpodae Pavilion' represents one of Gangneung's scenic spots where it is located at Gyeongpo-ro, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do, and it has been designated as the sixth Gangwon-do cultural asset. 'Gyeongpodae Pavilion' shows the Goryeo Dynasty's culture that mainly consists of 6 spaces in front, 5 spaces on the side, and 32 pillars.

Near 'Gyeongpodae Pavilion' is the 'Gyeongpo Beach' and 'Gyeongpoho Lake', during new years at 'Gyeongpo Beach' there are many tourists who visit to see the sunrise, so it is highly recommended to reserve accommodations beforehand. Also, 'Gyeongpoho Lake' is close to 'Chodang-dong' where the 'Chodang Sundubu' is famous which is one of delicacy's of this area and is recommended for tourists to visit.

It is considered that King Chungsuk of Goryeo in year 13 founded 'Bakseuk' which is known as 'Banghaejeong' in the Anreumsa Temple of Gangwon-do and 'Inwolsa Temple' that was located in the back of the mountains, yet later the location has been said to have been moved but there is still no detailed evidence. At the 'Gyeongpodae Pavilion' it is known that Yulgok Yi I at age 10 built the 'Gyeongpo Daebu' which are letters of nouns such as the 'uhsaeji' of 'sukjong' and 'sangryangmun' of johamang. Here you can see 'Gyeongpo 8 gyeong' and 'Gyeongpo wolsam' that has been handed down to the great spectacle of a strong man.

Jeongdongjin Beach
Beach with a way station closest to the sea in the world
Introduction
Gangneung Jeongdongjin Beach is located at Jeongdongjin-ri, Gangdong-myeon, Gangneung. Jeongdongjin is famous as the best place for watching the first sunrise of a new year. This beach is about 250m long and has an area of 13,000㎡. Sea bathing is available from July to August. It is also possible to collect clams, mussels, sea urchins and seaweed from the rocks around.

Jeongdongjin Beach is famous for having a way station closest to the sea in the world. Therefore, guests can see the wide ocean right upon getting off Jeongdongjin Station. It also has a convenient transportation with trains going between Gangneung and Jeongdongjin. The beach is so large that there are three places suitable for sea bathing; in front of Jeongdongjin Station, Hourglass Park and Jeongdongjin Embankment.

Jeongdongjin Beach became first known as a filming site of an SBS drama titled "Hourglass" in 1995, getting more and more popularity with people. Then, a park in front of such filming site was named as "Hourglass Park." Moreover, Hourglass Beach has such a wide sandy beach that it can draw many frequent visitors. It also allows people to enjoy many tourist attractions together, including Hourglass Park, Sculpture Park in the south and Heonhwa-ro Road. There is a park on the hill 700m away from the south of Jeongdongjin, commanding a panoramic view toward the East Sea, beaches, the train station and coastal roads. Being close to Jeongdongjin, this Sculpture Park exhibits many beautiful sculptures, so that lots of families and couples can enjoy visiting here. Sculpture Park is equipped with convenient facilities like a store, a train cafe and a boathouse cafe. A giant boat-shaped condominium was built in 2001. Visitors can enjoy staying overnight thanks to this Sun Cruise condominium with about 600 rooms. The boathouse cafe takes on an actual boat shape, including a restaurant, a cafe and an observatory. Although it is just a model sitting on the land, visitors can feel as if they were floating at sea while taking a picture there. Being close to the sea, visitors can see many boat-shaped buildings, which look fascinating beyond imagination.

Anmok Beach
A white sand beach with soft sand stretching away
Introduction
Gangneung Anmok Beach is considered one of the most beautiful coffee streets nationwide. It holds a coffee festival in spring and fall and has a long coastal line, along with visitors can drive to look around many other tourist sites. In particular, some famous coffee shops present not only their own unique coffee aromas and tastes but also delicious desserts.

Gangneung Anmok Beach is located at the southernmost part of Gangneung. While driving to the north, visitors can see Gangmun Beach and Gyeongpo Beach in order. Therefore, it would be a good idea to plan a travel course starting from Anmok Beach. After tasting coffee in Gangneung Beach, it is recommended to go up in the direction of Gangmun Beach, try a hamburger from a famous home-made hamburger restaurant, take pictures in a photo zone, go up to Gyeongpo Beach, look around Gyeongpo Lake, and go to Jumunjin. By doing so, visitors can enjoy a grand finale of Gangneung Beach. Instead of the hamburger, it is also recommended to try Chodang Soft Tofu.
Tourist Tips
It is possible to visit Anmok Beach not only by car but also by public transportation. It takes about 40 minutes from Intercity Bus Terminal. It is recommended for families or couples to buy a cup of coffee from Gangneung's tourist attraction Anmok Beach Coffee Street and take a walk on the beach.

Jeongdongjin
The station located closest to the sea
Introduction
"Jeongdongjin" is a beach located at Jeongdongjin-ri, Gangdong-myeon, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do. This is named after the episode that there was a ferry in the straight east side of Gwanghwamun Gate of Hanyang. This is famous as one of the best sunrise spots in the country, drawing many tourists for sunrise of the new year.

"Jeongdongjin" is known as a filming site of a famous TV drama titled "Hourglass." It becomes famous as a tourist attraction, since a sunrise train started to run from Cheongnyangni Station. This sunrise train can be available from many stations nationwide, including Busan, Dongdaegu, Daejeon, Gwangju, Jeonju and Chuncheon. Around Jeongdongjin, there are many tourist sites such as various beaches, Hourglass Park and Hwanseon Cave.

"Jeongdongjin" was known as a place where a king had offered sacrifice to the Dragon King of the four seas from the Silla Dynasty. Now, it has become a sunrise attraction by holding Millennium Sunrise Festival as a state-designated event in 2000. There is Jeongdongjin Station, which has been listed to the Guinness Book of Records as the station located to be closest to the sea in the world. There are nearby tourist attractions such as "Rail Bike" for looking around "Jeongdongjin" and beaches of "Jeongdongjin" and "Deungmyeong," so that visitors can enjoy bathing with families or friends.

Heonhwa-ro Road
It was a stage of Hyangga Heonhwaga, a folk song of the Silla Dynasty
Introduction
The name of Heonhwa-ro Road is orginated in Hyangga, Korean folk songs. There is a background story of the name, Heonhwa. When Sunjeonggong became a Gangneung viceroy and was on his way to go to Gangneung, his wife, Suro vicereine, asked to pick a rhododendron at a cliff of a beach. However, nobody acted among travelling companions because it was dangerous. At that time, an old guy who was leading a cattle, picked the flower and sang for her. The song is Heonhwaga. Heonhwa-ro Road is from Nakpung intersection in Okgye-myeon to Jeongdonjin Station three-way intersection in Jeongdongjin-ri, and the road has a fine view.

Heonhwa-ro Road is the closest road from the ocean in Korea. It is a beach road from Simgok Port, under Jeongdongjin, to Geumjingan River. Jeongdongjin is well known for watching sunrise, so it is recommended to drive on the beach road after appreciating sunrise. Listening to the waves and admiring the blue ocean on Heonhwa-ro Road may make unforgettable memories.

There is Geumjin Beach when a driver advances towards the coast at Heonhwa-ro Road. This beach road is a 2km long roadway on marine terrace. It connects between Geumjin-ri and Simgok-ri and is surrounded by strange rock formations and cliffs. Metal fences are built around the coast for safety, and there are a small parking lot and some benches for visitors to appreciate the terrific ocean view.

Jumunjin Beach
Where you can catch clams as the water is shallow and clean
Introduction
Sandy Beach that is 700m in length, and 9,608㎡ in total area is a suitable vacation spot for group tourists who would like to catch clams because the water is shallow and clean. There is Hyangho Lake next to the beach, which gives another option, 'freshwater fishing for all four seasons.' Within dense pine forests of 6,600㎡ behind the beach is a sports park that allows camping.

Jumunjin Port next to Jumunjin Beach is a port mostly for cargo ships and is also one of the major fishing ports in the East Sea where about 350 fishing boats come and go. To some people, seafood market comes to mind first when hearing the word Jumunjin. If you feel hungry after a cup of coffee with a blue-colored sea of Jumunjin, make sure to visit the market and taste snow crab. You can taste the real Gangneung snow crab.

Okgye Beach
Beach that has clean and vast stretch of sandy beach and old pine forests
Introduction
Situated in san-105, Geumjin-ri, Okgye-myeon, the beach boasts clean and vast stretch of sandy beach and old pine forest. Influenced by streams of water flowing from nearby Seokbyeongsan Mountain into the ocean, the water is comparatively warm. Okgye Beach is a lovely vacation spot for anyone and has great features suitable for family or group tourists.

Next to the beach, there is Okgye Port that is famous for strong wave and for beautiful views in winter at the same time. Especially, Okgye port was designated as a port for cement transportation as a part of Okgye city planning project, so Gangneung Industrial Complex was built next to the port. The complex now takes an important part of cement business in Gangwon-do Province.

Yeongok Beach
An ideal beach for group camping.
Introduction
Yeongok Beach is located in Dongdeok-ri, Yeongok-myeon, and it has a sandy beach that is 700 meters long and 56,000㎡ wide. In particular, the dense pine grove makes it an ideal place for camping. Visitors can enjoy fishing sweetish in the clean waters of Yeongokcheon Stream flowing from Sogeumgang Valley and Jin Gogae(Ridge), and children as well as grown-ups can have a great time swimming in the water and fishing.

Yeongok Beach is a natural tourist summer resort where visitors can enjoy both climbing and swimming, because there is Sogeumgang Valley in the vicinity. There is a 1,000㎡ long temporary parking lot that can hold 40 cars a day, and a camping site where 881 tents can be put up in a pine grove of 13,220㎡. Yeongok Beach is famous for its camping site, so you will be able to make special memories while camping overnight.

Sacheon Beach
It is suitable for a family summer vacation because there are soft sands, a gentle slope and thick pine forests around.
Introduction
Sacheon Beach is very calm and clean and located between Gyeongpodae Beach and Yeongok Beach. It is 300m long and has an area of 18,000㎡. It was opened on July 1, 1975 and is adjacent to Gyeongpo Provincial Park, drawing many summer vacationers every year. Thanks to its black pine tree forest, a clean white sand beach and shallow waters, it is a good place for enjoying summer vacations. Visitors can make unforgettable memories here with pleasant smells from a quiet pine tree forest and its cool shadows.

Sacheon Beach is located between Gyeongpodae Beach and Yeongok Beach. It has such soft sands and gentle slope that it can be a good place for gathering sea shells. Gangneung is one of the places having most tourist attractions, out of which Sacheon Beach is considered as the best place to go in Gangneung. Since it was opened on July 1, 1975, it runs as a beach from July 15 to August 20. It has convenient facilities such as a camping site of 8,000㎡, an auto-camping site of 17,000㎡ along with a parking lot, a changing room, a shower room, a bungalow and a store, so it has been used as a summer recreation site for companies. As there is a military unit at the entrance of the beach, it is prohibited from entering the beach at night, and there are also other regulations.

Located near Anmok Beach, it is a quiet and calm seaside without many people. It takes on a emerald color, so visitors may feel like standing on some exotic coast in foreign countries. Due to its clear water and gentle waves, it draws many snorkelers, scuba diving fishermen and family tourists. The ocean shows different colors throughout the four seasons. It has such a good auto-camping site, that it could be considered as a heaven among those who like auto-camping.
